FREE PATTERN | Crochet Whale Keychain

Are you ready for a whale-y cute pattern? Ok I just had to throw in a cringe pun, but seriously we are so excited about this little cutie! It’s a mini version of our existing Wally Whale crochet pattern that you can use to create an adorable little whale keychain or crochet bag charm!

This free, written crochet pattern is super beginner friendly and works up really quick. If you’re looking for fast makes for your craft or market table (hello holiday market season!) then this one is for you. They’d look so cute in the booth, or on a bag—or both!

So, let’s gather some supplies and get started.

SUPPLIES:

NOTES:

  • Different tension may create different results, this pattern is created with a tighter tension.

  • This project should be worked in a continuous spiral. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning and end of each row.

  • You can use any weight of yarn for this pattern, just be sure to adjust to the appropriate hook size and remember the size of your finished product will be different.

ABBREVIATIONS:

mr: magic ring

sc: single crochet

slst: slip stitch

inc: increase (2 stitches in one stitch)

dec: decrease (crochet 2 stitches together)

[sc_, inc] x _ : Repeat the pattern in parentheses the number of times specified, increasing the stitch count.

[sc_, dec] x _ : Repeat the pattern in parentheses the number of times specified, decreasing the stitch count.

PATTERN

Head/Body

*Colour A*

Rnd 1: mr, sc 8 (8)

Rnd 2: [inc] x8 (16)

Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x8 (24)

Rnd 4-10 (7 rounds): sc 24 (24)

Rnd 11: [dec] x12 (12)

Use the invisible decrease by grabbing the FLO of each stitch.

Start Stuffing.

Place eyes on rounds 7 and 8 with ~7 stitches in between.

Rnd 12: [dec] x6 (6)

Tie off, gather stitches to close.

Side Fins x2

*Colour B*

Place a fabric pin on the side of the whale on round 4 (at the colour change), 1 stitch behind the eye.

  1. Create a slipknot. Insert hook into the stitch beside your marker, slst to join.

  2. Ch 4. Sk first stitch. Slst in remaining 3 stitches. Slst in next stitch over.

  3. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Repeat on the other side.

Tail Fins

*Colour B*

Find your desired placement, centered on the back of the head. Mark your placement with fabric pin.

  1. Create a slipknot. Insert hook into the stitch beside your marker, slst to join.

  2. Ch 4. Sk first stitch. Slst in remaining 3 stitches.

  3. Insert your hook into center stitch under marker, slst to join.

  4. Ch 4. Sk first stitch. Slst in remaining 3 stitches.

  5. Insert into next stitch. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Water Spout

*Colour A*

  1. Create a slipknot. Insert hook into the center of the top of the head, slst to join.

  2. Ch 4. Sk first stitch. Slst in remaining 3 stitches.

  3. Insert into same stitch on the head, slst.

  4. Repeat two more times to create 3 water streams.

  5. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Attach keychain clip to your whale.
