FREE PATTERN | Crochet Donut
Hello friend! We are so excited to be featuring the free, written version of one of our more popular video tutorials: a crocheted donut!
The best projects are the ones that have endless options for colour, style and creativity, and these squishy adorable donuts are just that! This free beginner crochet pattern is super easy, and the donuts work up really quickly. Plus, they make the perfect addition to your craft or market table.
We’ve received so many comments from crafters that have made these for their markets and fairs, and they sell out every time! You can customize them to be smaller to make a keychain or bag charm, or jumbo as a pillow or room decor. You can even add a ribbon on the top to make a donut Christmas ornament for the holidays.
Check out these adorable variations made by creators just like you.
We would love to hear/see other ideas that you have for these cuties in the comments, so be sure to let us know if you make them.
We’ll also take you through a clever method to change the colour in the middle to get a nice, straight line between the bottom and the icing on top.
Let’s gather our supplies and dive in.

NOTES:
Different tension may create different results, this pattern is created with a tighter tension.
This project should be worked in a continuous spiral. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning and end of each row.
You can use any weight of yarn for this pattern, just be sure to adjust to the appropriate hook size and remember the size of your finished product will be different.

PATTERN
*Colour A*
Row 1: slip knot, chain 16. *Attach the 16th chain to the 1st chain to make a circle and make a slst
Row 2: sc 16
Row 3: [sc, inc] x8 (24)
Row 4: [sc 2, inc] x8 (32)
Row 5: [sc 3, inc] x8 (40)
Row 6: [sc 4, inc] x8 (48)
Row 7-9: sc 48
Don’t pull all the way through your last sc. Switch to Colour B using seamless colour change.
We will now create a smooth line in between the top and bottom of the donut. To do this, we will first do a row of slip stitches in the back loop of each stitch around. This will be called Row 10A because the slip stitch does not provide enough height to be considered it’s own row. NOTE: Make sure you keep your slip stitches loose, or you may create more tension in the middle of your project.
Then, we will do a row of single crochet in the back loops only, and that will be called 10B. See photo below.
Row 10A: slst 48 BLO (48)
Row 10B: sc 48 BLO (48)
Row 11: sc 48 (48)
Row 12: [sc 4, dec] x8 (40)
Row 13: [sc 3, dec] x8 (32)
Row 14: [sc 2, dec] x8 (24)
Row 15: [sc, dec] x8 (16)
Tie off and leave a long tail. Tuck your yarn ends into the center.
Now we will sew the middle together. Flatten the donut out and align the stitches. You should have 16 stitches in the middle. Sew 8 stitches together through the top and bottom, stitch for stitch.
Begin stuffing. Push the fibre fill into the space that you’ve already sewn with your finger. Sew last 8 stitches together. Stuff a little bit as you go to fill the space.
Now it’s time for sprinkles! Using your Size 4 yarn in as many colours as you’d like, add in sprinkles with your darning needle. Make them loose, and have fun!
And that’s it!
